Yuuli is the currency of Ashuraan that was introduced at the end of the First Era of Isolation by the local Therepsine Mission. Despite being non-capitalistic in their nature, it was viewed as a necessary tool of control towards their end goals of regional dominance.
With no beacon from the Charitor Scion being recieved since the beginning of the two century long isolation, it was believed by many high ranking Thereps in the region that without guidance they must form their own path to Excai. Many viewed the silence as a “test”, and the adoption of a local currency was not without its pushback.
Ultimately the need for subjegation through capital was clear, and by the time the outer populace (non Thereps) had inter-connected and risen from the catacombs, the church was well outnumbered and they could not keep slaves from revolting.
This mixed with fears of the newly established “United Coasts” trade alliance gaining more power by establishing a currency before them, the Therepsine Mission of Ashuraan minted the first Yuuli coins in the Earth year 2708 AD.
The United Coasts ultimately did try to establish a currency (UCC, or United Coast Credits), though it failed soon after its launch due to being backed by speculative assets in a new economy, and not being tied to a resource standard. Additionally, it was printed on paper or cloth scrip and easily burned, flew away or got wet and melted. The reliance on printing presses in this fragile era was also a contributing factor to the downfall of the UCC. Eventually the United Coasts adopted the Yuul, being more interested in trade potential than being in charge of said currency. They also saw the Therepsine Mission as a large trading partner, and did not want to alienate them as customers.
The Yuul is backed by Yuulite, and despite it being an essentially useless material save for its cosmetic application, the Thereps were able to directly control the value due to having access to and owning most of the region’s Yuulite mining operations.
Prior to Yuuli being established, Yuulite was primarily used in the production of dining ware. Vintage Therepsine dining ware is viewed as collectable and is sometimes sold as a trading item with no other in game purpose.
Coloquially, Yuuli can also be referred to as “a Yuul” or “some Yuuls” in small denominations. A single Yuul is in fact hexoganal, and this shape is not due to graphical limitations. They are crimson red, and sport a single lower-case “y” on both sides.
